For Renfe a redundand Wayside Wheel Profile Monitoring (WPM) system has been installed to automatically measure key wheelset parameters, including wheel profile geometry, flange height, flange width, qR value, wheel diameter, and axle dimensions such as the back-to-back distance between wheels.

The system consists of two measurement units operating together, with one unit positioned on each side of the wheel. As a result, instead of capturing a single wheel profile per wheel, the system acquires two independent profile measurements, one from each side. This configuration ensures complete wheel coverage and reliable profile acquisition, even when sanding equipment partially obstructs one side of the wheel. This is particularly important for this project, as the fleet includes trainsets with sanders installed on different sides, depending on the vehicle configuration.
